Our feline pals come in a variety of colors, and with many different hairstyles. Of course, we also have some kitties that don’t have any fur at all, such as the Sphynx, Peterbald, and Donskoy. While not everyone finds hairless cats charming, these guys are actually just as fun and lovable as any other kitty. However, they do need a bit of extra TLC. Here, a London, ON vet discusses caring for a bald cat.

Basics

Just like any other kitty, Mittens will need good food, a clean litterbox, and proper veterinary care. She’ll also enjoy toys, playtime, and cat furniture. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Grooming

You wouldn’t think that your pet would need much by way of grooming, but that’s actually not the case. In fact, hairless kitties need to be bathed regularly. Their skin still produces oil, just as if they had fur. Mittens might get a bit greasy if you don’t clean her properly! Don’t use hot water: that could scald your pet. Lukewarm is best. You’ll also need a medicated, unscented shampoo made just for cats. Be sure to rinse well! If you miss any suds, they will dry into a thick film that could cause skin irritation. You’ll also need to care for your pet’s ears.

Cold

Although fur doesn’t completely protect kitties from bad weather, it does help quite a bit. Cats that don’t have fur are much more susceptible to temperature extremes than those who are wearing coats. In winter, you’ll need to make sure your pet stays warm. Offer Mittens a thermal or heated bed, as well as lots of soft blankets to dig into. Your feline pal may also enjoy wearing a little sweater or jacket. Just don’t force her to wear clothing if she seems uncomfortable. Overheating can be an issue when it’s hot out. On hot summer days, offer your cute pet a fan, or give her a frozen towel to doze off on.

Purrsonality

Although every kitty is different, hairless cats, such as the Sphynx, tend to be very affectionate and loving towards their humans. Many of them also don’t do well if left alone too much. You may want to consider giving your feline friend a buddy or playmate, so she doesn’t get lonely.
