The Poodle: The Original Doodle

All the doodles have one common ancestor: the Poodle. These popular, curly-haired dogs come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Active, smart, and playful, the Poodle has some very dedicated fans. Why are Poodles such a popular mix for hybrids? Their coats! These curly pups barely shed, and don’t produce a lot of dander. While they aren’t precisely hypoallergenic, they don’t bother people’s allergies as much as other dogs.

Doodling On

When did the doodle dog craze start? It’s hard to say for sure, but the Labradoodle was likely the first. The Labradoodle came into existence through the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, who wanted pups with the personality and temperament of guide dogs, but with low shedding coats. Then came the Golden Doodle, a lovable pup that combines the Golden Retriever’s adorable looks and great personality with low-maintenance fur.

Oodles of Doodles

We’ve mentioned the most popular doodles already. However, there are loads more. First, we have the Cockapoo. Not to be confused with the Cockatoo, the Cockapoo is a Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mix. The Schnoodle is a Schnauzer doodle, while the Sheepadoodle is a sheepdog doodle. There are some big doodles, such as the Saint Berdoodle (Saint Bernard) and the Bernoodle, a Bernese Mountain Dog mix. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the tiny Maltipoo, which is a Maltese/Poodle cross, and the Yorkipoo, which is the Poodle/Yorkshire terrier mix. There’s more! The Irish doodle is, you may have guessed, a poodle crossed with an Irish setter. There’s also the Whoodle, which is a Wheaton terrier/Poodle; the Aussiedoodle (Aussie Shepard/Poodle); the Bordoodle (Border Collie/Poodle); the self-explanatory Boxerdoodle; and, finally, the Cavoodle, which is a cross with the Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Whew! That’s a lot of doodles!

Doodle Care Tips

Doodle dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Therefore, specific care tips vary wildly, particularly when it comes to grooming. Ask your vet for specific advice. Of course, like any other pup, these guys love treats, toys, and belly rubs! Give your doodle pooch a special snack!
