One of the many things we love about our feline pals is the fact that they are so independent. Dogs can’t stay home by themselves for more than about 8-10 hours, at most, but kitties can be left alone for longer than that. However, you will need to take precautions to keep Fluffy both safe and happy while you’re out. Read on as a London, ON vet offers tips on leaving cats home alone.
Basics
First and foremost, make sure Fluffy has plenty of food and water. Canned food won’t keep very long, so kibble is the best choice if you’ll be gone for longer than an overnight trip. If your cat doesn’t usually eat kibble, start adding it to her diet a few weeks before you leave. As for water, an automated waterer is a good option. We also recommend setting out a few bowls of water. Remember to clean the litterbox before you leave!
Catproofing
Kitties have a rather remarkable capacity for getting into trouble. Make your home safe for your pet by removing or securing anything that could be dangerous. This includes toxic plants, wires and cords, small or sharp objects, plastic bags and ties, medicines, and chemicals. If Fluffy likes wand toys, put these up as well: you don’t want her getting tangled up!
Kitty Comforts
A few small touches will help make Fluffy’s alone time more better. Leave a light on, so she won’t be sitting alone in the dark at night. Also, keep a TV or radio on for background noise. The sound of music and voices can be very calming to kitties. Last but not least, keep your climate control running, so your pet doesn’t get too hot or too cold.
Tips
Although cats can stay by themselves safely for a day or two, that doesn’t mean Fluffy won’t get lonely. If you’re going to be gone longer than that, consider boarding your feline buddy or hiring a kitty sitter. We also recommend having someone stop in to check on your pet daily. Last but not least, only healthy adult cats should be left alone. If your pet is kitten, senior, and/or has medical issues, either board your furball or have someone stay with her.
