Are you planning to go camping this summer? It’s always great to get away for a bit, and enjoy some time in the Great Outdoors. Fido makes a great camping buddy! Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. Read on as a local London, ON vet offers tips on taking your dog camping.
Packing
You’ll need to pack a bag for Fido. Your pup will need food, treats, toys, bedding, blankets, a towel, a first aid kit, dishes, and an extra leash and collar. You may also want to bring along a doggy raincoat and, if you’ll be near water, a pet lifejacket.
Preventative Care
Before taking Fido camping, make sure he is microchipped, wearing current ID tags, and up to date on his vaccinations and parasite control products.
Cleanup
Always pick up after your pooch! You may be able to bury Fido’s waste in certain areas, but check with local ordinances first. This is illegal in many places.
Tick Checks
Do a thorough, nose-to-tail tick check on your canine companion every day. You can never be too careful with these dangerous parasites!
Exploring
Dogs love exploring new places, and sniffing unfamiliar patches of grass. Keep a close eye on your furry little adventurer, and don’t let him run around off-leash. The last thing you want is for Fido to charge off into the woods after a squirrel, or end up in a confrontation with a wild animal!
Water
Try not to let your furry friend drink directly from rivers, ponds, lakes, or streams. Offer your canine buddy the same water you’re drinking. Water taken from the wild should be boiled or treated first, as it could be contaminated.
Fires
Sitting around a campfire is definitely a highlight of many camping trips. Just don’t let Fido get too close to the flames. In the morning, you’ll need to keep him away from the fire pit, as he could walk over hot coals and burn his paws.
Trash
Fido is definitely not above digging through the trash in search of leftovers. This can be a dangerous habit, as garbage can contain things like skewers, bones, tin foil, can lids, and plastic wrap. (In many places, it can also attract bears, but that’s another topic.) Dispose of trash securely.
