Season’s Greetings! The holidays are traditionally a key time for charities. That’s definitely the case with many animal rescues and shelters. There are some truly wonderful ones out there doing all they can to help our furred and feathered friends. A London, ON vet lists some ways to help them in this article.
Support Local Shelters
Shelters are always in need of monetary assistance, but they also can use donations of things like food, toys, beds, and litter as well. You can even work this into a holiday gathering, just by letting people know you’ll be collecting supplies for homeless pets at the event. Call the shelter first, and see what they need.
Provide Emergency Shelters
Winters are extremely harsh for homeless animals. One thing you can do to help out stray animals near you is set out emergency shelters. You can make these out of storage totes: put one inside a larger one, and stuff the spaces in between with newspaper to add insulation. Then, cut a little door.
Tap Your Hood
When the temperatures drop, homeless animals often seek warmth by huddling up to cars. Tap your hood and check your wheel wells before starting your car when it’s cold out.
Spread The Word
There’s nothing wrong with sharing information , especially if it will help make the world better. Share a few posts on social media about the plight of homeless animals. Every little bit matters!
Be An Advocate
While there are many ways to help physically, it’s also important to support legislation that is meant to help our animal companions. Take time to look into new laws and bills that are being considered, and spread the word about them.
Get Your Pet Fixed
If your own furry pal hasn’t been fixed yet, then get that on the books ASAP. This will ensure that your dog or cat doesn’t contribute to the pet overpopulation problem by adding more litters. That’s really important!
Adopt
We don’t recommend giving pets as presents. While our furry pals are precious gifts, they’re also living beings that need a lot of love and care. That said, if you are ready to adopt a pet yourself, there’s no reason you can’t do it in December. Just be sure you’re ready, willing, and able to commit.
