Fido’s First Grooming Appointment

September 18th is Love Your Groomer Day in the UK! This holiday may be slow catching on on this side of the pond, but we’re onboard for it. Good grooming can make a huge difference in not just Fido’s appearance, but also his health and comfort. If you’ve never taken your canine buddy to a salon before, read on! A London, ON vet offers some tips for Fido’s first appointment below.

Ask About Timing

Fido’s first appointment may take a bit longer than subsequent ones will. You may need to fill out some forms, and provide copies of your pet’s vaccinations and medical records. (Note: do not use a groomer that does not require proof of your pooch’s vaccinations.) Make sure that you book enough time!

Be Clear About Instructions

Every dog is different, and they all have their own quirks, phobias, and grooming needs. Fido’s health can also affect his grooming needs. A pooch with hip dysplasia may need a station he can walk into and out of easily, while a fearful one may need extra TLC. Make sure to give this sort of information clearly, both verbally and in writing.

Bring Photos

Communication is important in any relationship, whether it’s personal or professional. One area where it’s easy to get signals crossed is with doggy haircuts. If you’re trying to describe a cut verbally, there’s just naturally a lot of room for interpretation … and misinterpretation. Bring photos of what you want.

Be Realistic

We know, some pups look really cute with lion cuts or other fun ‘do’s. However, no haircut is universally safe or suitable for all dogs. Follow your vet and groomer’s recommendations.

Puppies

If Fido is a puppy, then it’s extra crucial for this visit to go well, as it’s important for him to form a pawsitive impression of his hairdresser. You also want him to get used to having his feet handled, as well as to being brushed, bathed, and perhaps blow dried. Offer him a new toy or a special treat when you pick him up.

Ask Questions

Groomers all vary a bit in how they do business. Some will charge extra for certain services, or for late pickups. And while some offer medical grooming, others do not. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
