Arthritis In Cats

Have you noticed your feline pal seeming stiff lately? If so, your kitty may have arthritis. This common condition is generally the same for kitties as it is with people: it occurs when the cartilage and soft tissue that connects your pet’s bones and joints begins to wear down and deteriorate, causing pain and stiffness. A London, ON vet discusses arthritis in cats below.

Causes

There’s no one cause for arthritis. However, there are factors that can increase the risk. Age and obesity are at the top of the list here. Fluffy’s body composition is another factor. Cats that have previously been injured are also at higher risk, as are those who have had orthopedic surgery. Genetic defects can also play a role.

Symptoms

The signs of arthritis may be quite subtle at first, and can be easy to miss. Fluffy may hesitate when jumping onto her favorite perch or chair. She may have a hard time with stairs, and may seem a bit stiff and sore when she walks. Unkempt fur can also be a red flag as well, since arthritic kitties often have a hard time bending and stretching well enough to reach their entire bodies. Other signs include reduced interest in play, grumpiness, and trouble using the litterbox. Stiffness, limping, lameness are also potential indicators. Your feline pal may also sleep even more than usual. Of course, many of these signs can be attributed to several different issues. Contact your vet immediately if you notice any of them.

Treatment

Arthritis can’t be cured, but there are many treatments available. Laser therapy may be helpful. It’s painless, effective, and noninvasive, and is becoming quite popular among veterinarians. Fluffy may also benefit from medication and/or supplements. If your feline friend is overweight, getting her back to a healthy weight will also be beneficial. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Home Care

Proper home care is also important. Get your feline buddy a litterbox with low sides, which will be easier for her to get in and out of. You may also want to set out footstools and ottomans to help Fluffy reach her favorite napping spots. Your feline buddy may also need some help with grooming. Soft beds, of course, will also not go unappreciated.
