International Bacon Day is September 6th! Of course, if you were to ask Fido how he’d like to celebrate, he’d want all the bacon he could eat, and perhaps a trip to the dog park. Bacon and other treats are fine, but good dog care means paying attention to other aspects of your canine friend’s care. A London, ON vet suggests some other ways to keep that tail going below.
Bedding
Making sure Fido can sleep comfortably is very important! This is a great time to get your four-legged friend a new bed. Orthopedic beds are great options for medium and large dogs. Little pups often like beds with raised sides, as they feel safer.
Good Food
Has it been a while since you revisited your canine pal’s menu? Perhaps Fido is now a senior, or is at risk of developing specific health issues. Do some research, and ask your vet for recommendations. If you do make changes, do so slowly, so as to not upset that cute furry belly.
Training
Does Fido know basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, and Heel? Or does his ‘petucation’ go out the window as soon as he spots a squirrel? If your pup needs to work on his training, take some time to work with him. If you’re having trouble, consider getting professional help. It will be well worth it in the long run!
Grooming
Fido would likely give you that sad, accusing stare if he knew you planned to celebrate his favorite day by giving him a bath. However, dogs are both healthier and more comfortable with good grooming. That includes dental care and claw trims, too! (Bacon can come after.)
Playtime
Playing is of course fun for Fido, but it’s also very important for his physical and mental well-being. It helps him burn off zoomies and keeps him in top doggy shape. Carve out some playtime … and help your pooch work off that bacon!
Veterinary Care
Fido would probably rather go to the park than come see us, but that’s only because he doesn’t understand why visiting his doctor is so important. We recommend all dogs be fixed, spayed or neutered, and kept current on their vaccines, exams, and parasite control. If your canine buddy is due, book an appointment.
