Fido’s Thanksgiving Plans

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Do you have your holiday plans finalized yet? We suspect your dog has his schedule worked out! A London, ON vet discusses Fido’s Turkey Day agenda below.

Morning Workout

Take Fido for a good long walk before the doorbell starts ringing, and then indulge him with a vigorous play session. Your cute pet will be calmer—and therefore better behaved—if he’s tuckered out after his doggy workout.

Supervise

One thing we can say for sure is that Fido will pay very close attention to all that delicious food. He may also be underfoot—and looking extra adorable—when that turkey comes out of the oven. It is a holiday, and dogs are definitely something to be grateful for, so give your faithful pet something special. Just stick to healthy foods, like cooked, plain turkey without the skin, bones, or fat.

Greet Visitors

Fido is very committed to his position as door doggy, and he may get quite excited at an influx of guests. If your pet tends to jump on people, put him in his crate or in a quiet back room as people are coming or going. Make sure he has comfy bedding, toys, and a few treats.

Collect All The Belly Rubs

Many of our canine patients are basically furry hams who love attention. Fido may spend quite a bit of time getting belly rubs and ear scritches, and offering people his favorite toy. If you have youngsters coming over, you’ll want to monitor interactions between Fido and his young friends. Little kids can sometimes inadvertently agitate dogs by making loud noises or sudden movements. They may also unknowingly feed your dog something that isn’t safe for him.

Beg

When dinner is served, your furry pal may very well put his most theatrical begging tactics in action. This can make guests uncomfortable. It can also be dangerous, as someone may give your pooch something that isn’t good for him. Put Fido in his crate, in the yard, or in a quiet back room while everyone is eating.

Nap

After dinner, you may want to relax until the food coma passes. Settle down on the couch with your canine companion nearby. Dogs are great cuddle buddies!
