Are you planning to take a vacation this year? Fido loves exploring new places, and would more than likely be delighted to join you. Here, a London, ON vet discusses traveling with dogs.
Packing
Remember to pack a bag for Fido. Your canine companion will need food, toys, medicine, grooming supplies, treats, a spare leash and collar, a jacket and/or raincoat, towels, dishes, waste baggies, and bedding.
Preparation
Before leaving, make sure Fido is microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on his vaccinations and parasite control. Bring copies of his paperwork with you, as you may need them.
Crate
We know, many dogs enjoy sticking their heads out the window. Unfortunately, this really isn’t safe. Your canine pal could get bugs or dust in his eyes, nose, or mouth, and he would be in a dangerous spot in case of an accident. Keep Fido crated for travel. It’s safer for both of you!
Carsickness
Dogs can suffer from carsickness, just like people can. If your four-legged friend gets squeamish on car rides, try to acclimate him by taking him for progressively longer drives. Also, avoid feeding your furry pal just before you leave. When you’re on the road, keep a window cracked, so Fido always gets fresh air flowing back to him. Stop every few hours to let your pooch relieve himself and stretch his legs.
Water
Strange water may upset Fido’s furry tummy. Bring water from home, or plan to get bottled water for your canine buddy.
Reservations
If you’re staying with friends or family, or going the Airbnb route, make sure that your four-legged friend is welcome along with you. If you’re going to be staying at a hotel, check rates and policies for pets. It’s a good idea to make a list of pet-friendly hotels along your route, in case you end up stopping somewhere other than where you initially intended.
The Arrival
When you reach your destination, walk through your room before bringing your pooch in. Fido may be more at ease if he picks up your scent in your quarters. Once you are settled in, take your furry bff for a long walk, and get the lay of the land together. Traveling with dogs can be really fun!
