Is your feline buddy asleep right now? The odds are fairly high that the answer to that question is a yes. Cats are, for some reason, extremely tired. While sleeping kitties are absolutely adorable, all those naps aren’t doing Fluffy’s waistline any favors. Therefore, if you want to keep your pet from becoming a furry couch potato, you may need to trick, entice, or even bribe her into staying active. A London, ON vet offers tips on how to do that in this article.
Toys
Make sure that Fluffy has lots of toys to pounce on when she’s feeling frisky. Classic cat playthings, like catnip mice, are great, but you can also offer your pet modern toys. Automated laser pointers, robotic mice, and remote-controlled snakes are just a few of the fun new things you can find online and in pet stores.
Apps
Did you know that there are now apps that let you play with Fluffy remotely, using your phone and a laser pointer? The apps use a camera as an interface, so you can watch your furball playing. (Note: although this may sound like a great way to get through a boring meeting at work, it’s probably best to save it for your lunch break.)
Cat Furniture
Get your feline pal some pieces of pet furniture that encourage her to jump and climb. Cat towers are great for this!
Playtime
We probably don’t have to tell you that playing is fun for cats. Fluffy clearly enjoys pouncing on catnip mice and chasing that little red dot. Kitty playtime is also pretty entertaining for us! Take a few minutes a day to play with your feline friend.
Bribery
Even small bursts of activity can help keep your cat in shape. Put Fluffy’s curious nature to use! If you toss a toy—or even a crumpled up piece of paper—down the hall, chances are, your kitty will run after it, just to see what it is. You can also call Fluffy to you from the other end of the house. Give your cute pet a cuddle or a forehead kiss as a reward when she reaches you. These small moments can really add up after a while!
