Shedding Season

Winter is on its way out the door. As spring takes hold, many of our furry patients will be more than happy to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and sunlight. However, for pet owners, the changing seasons also mean dealing with lots of pet fur. We can help! Here, a London, ON vet offers tips on getting through shedding season.

Brushing

The best way to control the amount of pet fur you find everywhere is to brush your pet daily. This won’t change the amount of fur your four-legged friend sheds, but it will trap that fur in a brush before it ends up on your sofa. If you have a dog, take Fido outdoors to brush him. That way, that dead fur will just blow away, instead of ending up stuck to everything.

Fur Busting

Did you know that a squeegee works very well at removing pet fur from carpets and furniture? A rubber dish glove will also do the trick, as will a damp sponge.

Vacuum

Regular vacuuming is definitely a must for pet parents at this time of year. Do high traffic areas and your furry buddy’s favorite lounging spots every day. Once a week, do a more thorough cleaning. Since it’s springtime, you may want to go all out with a deep clean: get your stairs, drapes, and runners as well.

Clothes

It may not be a bad idea to keep a few extra lint rollers around at this time of year. Stash some in your car, and in your desk at work. If you want to get pet fur off a single piece of clothing, just toss it into the dryer with a damp washcloth for a few minutes. You may also want to opt for clothes that don’t trap fur. Denim and silk blends are good options.

Air Filter

The change of seasons can be a great reminder to change out your air filter. This is especially important if your family members and/or friends are prone to allergies.

Slipcovers

Even if you don’t use slipcovers all year, you may want to put some on for peak shedding times. Look for ones that are easy to get on and off. You can also put a sheet over your pet’s bed.
