National Dog Day

There’s a special howliday coming up: National Dog Day is August 26th! While we think dogs should be celebrated every day, this is a great time to score some extra tail wags. A London, ON vet offers tips on how to pamper your pup in this article.

Snacks

Treats are at the top of the list of Fido’s favorite things. A steak wouldn’t be inappropriate for this special occasion. Or, make your canine buddy some pupsicles. Put kibble, dog biscuits; cooked, plain meat, fish, or chicken; bacon bits; and/or pet-safe fruits and veggies in waxed paper cups or an ice cube tray. Then, pour water or sodium-free broth over it, and freeze overnight. Instant tail wags!

New Bed

One of the best ways you can spoil your furry companion is by making sure he has a comfy bed. Dog beds are not one-size-fits-all, however. Large breeds and senior pooches will benefit from the extra support of an orthopedic bed. Little dogs often prefer beds with raised sides, while other pups may prefer bean bag beds.

Yard ‘Pupgrade’

Do you have a yard for Fido to chase squirrels around in? Add a doghouse for your canine friend! Fido may also appreciate a sandbox, so he can bury toys and treats. Outdoor toys, such as tug toys, are also a great idea.

Veterinary Appointment

It’s probably safe to say that most of our canine patients would rather go to the park, or beach, or a drive-through, than come visit us. However, health care is just as important for pets as it is for people. Healthy dogs are happy dogs! If Fido is overdue, call to make an appointment for him.

Puppy Playdate

As the saying says, everything is better with friends. Have some friends with polite, well-behaved dogs come over, and let your pooch enjoy socializing with his buddies. Host a potluck or barbeque for your friends, and offer lots of snacks and toys for Fido’s four-legged pals.

Helping Other Dogs

While it’s important to make your pup feel loved, don’t forget about other pooches. Many dogs are still looking for their forever homes! Consider making a donation to a local shelter in Fido’s name. You can also spread the word on social media about dogs that are available for adoption.
