Autumn Care for Dogs

Fall is just around the corner! This is a great time to take some nice long walks with your canine companion, and soak up autumn’s beautiful weather and foliage. Fido may also enjoy some extra-long play sessions or a few trips to a local park before the weather gets cold. However, this time of year can be dangerous for Man’s Best Friend, so you may want to take some precautions to keep your pet safe. Read on as a London, ON vet discusses autumn care for dogs.

Food

Some dogs need extra calories in cold weather. If your furry pal is a working dog, a senior, a puppy, a nursing mama, or just spends a lot of time outdoors, your may need to increase Fido’s portion sizes in winter. Certain supplements may also be beneficial. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Seasonal Hazards

Chemical exposure is a major concern at this time of year. In fall, many people fill their cars with antifreeze, and treat their lawns and gardens with chemicals. Be sure not to expose your canine companion to any of these toxins! Poisonous seasonal plants, such as mushrooms, are another issue. Halloween also brings some specific dangers, such as candy, candy wrappers, decorations, and increased traffic. Keep a close eye on Fido, and keep him away from potential hazards. Ask your vet for more information.

Clothing

Some dogs need an extra layer of warmth to protect them from the cold. If your pooch has a thin coat, he may need a doggy sweater on frigid days. Have some fun when shopping for your furry buddy, and pick things that show off his personality. Just be sure that Fido’s clothes fit well, and are not tight or itchy. Avoid anything with buttons or other parts your pup may try to eat. You may also want to choose things that are machine washable.

Bedding

Who doesn’t love snuggling up in a warm bed on a cold night? Make sure Fido has a clean, comfy doggy bed to doze off in. If you have a large breed or senior pooch, you may want to pamper your pet with an orthopedic and/or heated bed. If Fido has a doghouse, give that a good cleaning as well!
