Cat Care Tips for People in Apartments

Do you and your kitty live in an apartment? Cats are great pets for apartment dwellers! However, there are some things you can do to keep your kitty happy and healthy at home. Read on for some great cat care tips for apartment dwellers from a London, ON vet.

Window View

Make your furball a comfy window seat, so she can watch birds and squirrels. We do recommend getting something other than blinds for a window treatment, though: Fluffy has been known to destroy blinds.

Scratching

If you don’t want Fluffy using your sofa as a manicure station, you’ll need to provide a good kitty tower or scratching post. One good DIY option is to get a smooth piece of wood, attach a piece of carpet to it, and nail it to the wall. Presto!

Plants

Set out some pet safe plants will give Fluffy a taste of nature, and keep your place looking great. Check the ASPCA website for suitable options.

Litterboxes

One of the many great things about having a cat is that you won’t have to rush home to walk your pet. However, your kitty’s private bathroom probably won’t do much for your décor. Keep Fluffy’s litterbox clean! Plants, air fresheners, and good air filters will help battle foul odors. Look online for clever ways to hide the litterbox. One good method is to repurpose an end table with doors. Just cut a kitty hole in one side, and put the litterbox inside. A folding screen will also work.

Keeping Kitty Purring

Make sure Fluffy is comfortable and entertained while you are out. Keep a light on if you’ll be gone after dark, and don’t turn your climate control off. Also, offer your furball lots of fun toys to play with. You may also want to keep a radio or TV on, to keep your cute pet from feeling lonely.

Purrniture

Look for things that offer vertical space, like cat towers or wall-mounted furniture. Kitties love looking down on their humans with a smug, superior expression!

Veterinary Care

Indoor cats should see the vet at least once a year. Keep Fluffy up to date on her vaccinations and parasite control products. Ask your vet for specific advice.
