Common Cat Care Mistakes

Cats have many wonderful qualities that make them beloved pets. One of the best things about Fluffy is the fact that she is so independent. However, our feline pals aren’t quite as self-sufficient as they would like us to think. In fact, kitties need quite a bit of care to thrive. Below, a London, ON vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

Letting Fluffy Roam

We know, Fluffy loves rolling around in the grass and pouncing on squirrels and chipmunks. However, your furry little adventurer will be much safer staying indoors. Cats face some very serious dangers outside, including cars, weather, predators, and other kitties. Keep your furball safe and sound indoors!

Overfeeding/Poor Diet

Proper nutrition is very important. Make sure your pet is eating high quality food. While we can’t deny that chubby cats are cute, far too many of our feline friends are overweight or obese. Those extra pounds can put your kitty’s health at serious risk! If you have a furry little butterball on your hands, ask your vet for tips on helping Fluffy trim down.

Lack of Stimulation

As you may have noticed, cats are rather drowsy little furballs. However, Fluffy can’t sleep all the time. Kitties need ways to amuse themselves when they are awake. Cats can get bored and restless with nothing to do or watch! Give your furball lots of fun toys, and play with her every day. A good window view will also help prevent kitty boredom.

Not Enough Veterinary Care

Many of our feline patients don’t see us as often as they should! Fluffy should be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. In between visits, keep an eye out for signs of illness. Call your vet right away if you notice anything amiss.

Dirty Litterboxes

Cleaning Fluffy’s litterbox isn’t the best part of having a cat, but it is very important. No one likes a dirty bathroom!

Punishment

It may be a bit of an understatement to say that cats don’t think the way we do. However, it’s important to realize they don’t understand the concept of punishment. Never reprimand your feline buddy: this may just frighten or confuse her! If Fluffy misbehaves, ask your vet for advice on teaching her better petiquette.
