Exercising Your Dog in Winter

Ontario isn’t exactly known for balmy winters. It can get pretty chilly here in Canada! Once the temperatures drop, you may want to keep your dog’s walks short and sweet. However, you don’t want to let your pet become a furry, four-legged couch potato. Read on as a London, ON vet discusses exercising your dog in winter.

Fetch

Fetch is a great way to keep Fido moving. Choose an area without a lot of breakable items, and toss your four-legged friend his favorite toy.

Laser Pointers

Fido can also get a decent workout in by chasing a laser pointer. Just don’t shine the laser directly into your furry friend’s eyes.

Treadmills

It may sound silly, but some dogs really like walking on treadmills. You’ll need to take some time training Fido, however. Start him out on the slowest setting, to let him get used to the treadmill. Also, keep your pet’s safety in mind. Always remove your canine companion’s collar before his workout, and never leave him unsupervised. It’s also important to build your dog’s endurance up slowly, so you don’t overexert him.

Stair Runs

Stair runs are a great way for your pooch to get his daily workout in! Go to the top of the stairs, holding one of your dog’s favorite toys, and call Fido to you. When he reaches you, toss the toy down the stairs. Chances are, your pup will go get it and bring it back to you. A few rounds of this will really get your pet’s heart pumping!

Walks

Fido will still need regular walks in the cold. If your pet has thin fur, he may need a doggy sweater or jacket for his daily strolls. Paw care is very important on winter walks. Keep your canine buddy’s claws clipped, and trim his toe fur tufts as well. If your furry companion doesn’t like wearing booties, use paw balm or wax to protect his feet.

Winter Sports

While not all dogs like being out in the cold, some pooches love winter. If you have a high-energy dog, your canine buddy may enjoy skijoring. This is the term for letting your pup pull you along on skis. Just be sure to ask your vet before starting training.
